چکیده

We suggest a geometrical framework to discuss the action of slabs of negatively refracting materials. We show that these slabs generate the same orbits as normal materials, but traced out in opposite directions. This property allows us to confirm that the action of any lossless multilayer can be optically cancelled by putting it together with the multilayer constructed as the inverted mirror image, with ǫ and μ reversed in sign.

Some problems with negative refraction.

Some Problems with Negative Refraction* by John Michael Williams P. O. Box 2697, Redwood City, CA 94064 [email protected] Abstract J. B. Pendry's "Negative Refraction Makes a Perfect Lens" is analyzed. It appears that several statements may be understood in terms of lens design but not in terms of fundamental behavior of light. In a recent Letter, "Negative Refraction Makes a Perfect Lens" (P...

1 S ep 2 00 8 Does negative refraction make a perfect lens ?

A discussion of a question, studied earlier by V.Veselago in 1967 and by J. Pendry in 2000, is given. The question is: can a slab of the material with negative refraction make a perfect lens? Pendry’s conclusion was: yes, it can. Our conclusion is: no, in practice it cannot, because of the fluctuations of the refraction coefficient of the slab. Resolution ability of linear isoplanatic optical i...

Lorentz covariance of the canonical perfect lens

The electromagnetic properties of classical vacuum (i.e., empty space) are characterized by its permittivity ǫ0 = 8.854 × 10 −12 F m and permeability μ0 = 4π × 10 −7 H m. In contrast, anti–vacuum has permittivity −ǫ0 and permeability −μ0 [1]. The perfect lens, as conceptualized by Pendry [2], consists of a slab of anti–vacuum sandwiched by two slabs of vacuum. While this perfect lens is an idea...

Effect of Substrate Index of Refraction on the Design of Antireflection Coatings

Formulae to estimate the average percent reflectance (Rave) of a broadband antireflection (AR) coating as a function of the bandwidth (B), the overall thickness (C), the index of refraction of the last layer (L), and the difference between the indices of the highand low-index layers (D) were reported in 1991. Various refinements of these formulae and other insights into the underlying behavior ...

Coherent perfect nanoabsorbers based on negative refraction.

Based on both analytical dipole model analyses and numerical simulations, we propose a concept of coherent perfect nanoabsorbers (CPNAs) for divergent beams. This concept makes use of the properties of a slab with negative refraction and small losses. The proposed CPNA device would allow focusing radiation in nanoscale regions, and hence could be applied in optical nanodevices for such diverse ...
